Disc Bulges and Herniation

Have you been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc?  Byroad Chiropractic can help!

Intervertebral discs are the small cushions between your vertebrae. These discs are composed of a hard outer ring with a soft gel-like inner circle. The disc’s function is to hold together your vertebrae while preventing your bones from rubbing against one another during physical activity like bending over or lifting large objects. Your discs are very important.

What Is a Disc Injury?

Disc injuries are more common than most people think. Despite this, they can often go undetected as some patients feel no pain. The pain is determined by the size and location of the herniation within the back. The damaged disc can potentially irritate nerves around it which can cause a stabbing or shooting pain sensation and even issues within the legs. Your symptoms will depend upon which discs are affected. Most patients experience herniated discs in the lumbar vertebrae of the lower back or the cervical vertebrae in the neck.

If the affected disc is in your lower back, pain is likely to be concentrated in your legs and buttocks, possibly even reaching your foot. You may have trouble walking and find yourself prone to stumbling or tripping. You’ll typically feel numbness, tingling, and weakness in one or both of your legs.

If the affected disc is in your neck, the pain will be more severe in your arms and shoulders. You may find you have trouble carrying, holding, or lifting objects that wouldn’t usually be a problem. You’ll probably experience numbness, tingling, and weakness in one or both of your arms.

Occasionally, people with herniated discs aren’t aware of them until they’re detected through diagnostic imaging.
